Shared Community Action Group (SCA) to Sponsor One Book One Community Festival

The One Book One Community initiative brings people from across the community
together by having them read and discuss the same book. The idea comes from the
American Library Association, and cities and towns across the USA have been adopting
the program for more than two decades. They choose a book that suits them given their
specific interests and, not only schedule discussions of the book, but create other
activities and events that flow from the book’s themes.

The Shared Community Action Group (SCA) is organizing a One Book One Community
for Macomb, with the discussions and other activities to be scheduled for February
2023. The SCA Education Committee has chosen “Friendship” as the theme and three
books, Adrienne Graham’s The Color of Friendship for young children, Caitlin Alifirenka
and Martin Ganda’s I Will Always Write Back for teens, and William Blinn’s Brian’s Song
for adults. They will help focus the discussions and serve as guides for festival activities.
Adrienne Graham, an elementary school teacher at Lincoln School, has shared The
Color of Friendship with the community during several readings and discussions since
the book’s publication n in 2020. I Will Always Write Back tells how the authors, one in
the US, one in Zimbabwe, became best friends, and Brian’s Song, documents the story
of the friendship between Chicago Bears running backs Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo.
They all vividly show what friendship is and its importance in our lives.

The SCA is asking interested individuals and organizations to help plan discussions and other activities around these books and the friendships they explore. Activities might include, to name a few possibilities, art (drawing, collages, coloring), games, theater, concerts, and panels. The goal is to bring members of our diverse community together to look at some of our common interests and shared values.

Please contact the SCA ([email protected]) if an organization you
belong to or you yourself are interested in helping with this project.

THE SCA GROUP IS A JOINT EFFORT OF LEADERS FROM CIVIC AND RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS WHO COME TOGETHER IN SUPPORT OF MACOMB’S EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN DIALOGUE AND COOPERATION AMONG THE DIVERSE MEMBERS OF THE MACOMB COMMUNITY.
