Health Department Provides COVID-19 Update

By now we have all heard of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. This is a rapidly evolving situation and we want to let our community know what we are doing, how you can prepare, and where to go for the most reliable and up-to-date information.

We currently do not have any cases in McDonough or Schuyler County. We are monitoring the situation closely and staying in constant contact with our state and local partners. Local health departments throughout the state, including the McDonough County Health Department and Schuyler County Health Department, have plans in place and we continue to prepare and utilize these plans as needed.

There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about the virus and the seriousness of it. Unlike seasonal influenza (the flu), no one has immunity to COVID-19 nor do we have a vaccine for it yet. The symptoms of COVID-19 include a cough, fever, and shortness of breath. Those most at risk for the virus are older adults and people with compromised immune systems. While many people may not fall into this category, it is important to remember we all come into contact with those at risk daily. You may have mild or no symptoms of the virus (i.e.-be a carrier), but you may transmit the virus to someone who is at higher risk. This is why we suggest social distancing, hand washing, self-quarantine, and staying home if you are sick.

As we continue to prepare, there are things you can do to prepare as well.

  1. Prepare to say in your homes for at least two weeks. This means that you will need to have enough food prescriptions, water, over-the-counter medicine, and any other items that are necessary (toilet paper, hygiene supplies, pet food and supplies, any necessary medical supplies). This is important in case your become ill. We do not want you to go out of your home if you are sick, even for food or medicine, as this could potentially expose others. Additionally, public health could ask people to remain in their homes to help limit community spread, for example if you are asked to self-quarantine due to exposure to someone with COVID-19.
  2. The CDC, Illinois Department of Public Health, and World Health Organization have resources and guidance on their websites for businesses, healthcare providers and Schuyler County Health Department facilities, childcare providers, schools and universities, first responders, long term care providers and general public on their websites. They are constantly updating them so check them regularly for the latest information.
  3. Get a flu shot and if you are eligible, a pneumonia shot. Make sure all of your vaccinations are up-to-date. This is important as our healthcare system is likely to be stretched by COVID-19.
  4. Help prepare others. Share reliable, accurate, and up-to-date information with your friends, family, and neighbors. If you know someone who may have trouble preparing, please assist them.
  5. Please follow the guidelines provided by public health. It is our mission to prevent, protect, and promote health in our communities. We are prepared and working hard to do our best for you but we need your help.
  6. Please help us spread facts not fear. Share accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information. These resources will help keep you informed and prepared. The best sources for up-to-date, reliable and accurate information are:

The McDonough and Schuyler County Health Departments are working closely with our community and state partners to prepare for COVID-19.
