High school seniors from west-central Illinois can put their college career on the fast track beginning this fall through a special program offered at Western Illinois University.
Students from Macomb, West Prairie, Bushnell, Abingdon-Avon, VIT, Cuba, Lewistown, Astoria, Canton, Spoon River Valley, Monmouth-Roseville, West Central, United, Hamilton, Warsaw, Illini West, Southeastern, Brown County, Rushville-Industry and Beardstown, who are entering their senior year, can now apply for admission at WIU and take classes at Western prior to completing high school. For the 2017-2018 school year, the University will offer an automatic scholarship to special admit high school students, which will cover two-thirds of their tuition.
Qualified students who choose to continue their education at Western following their high school graduation are eligible for automatic scholarships through the Western Commitment scholarship program. In addition, WIU's Cost Guarantee program, which freezes tuition, fees, room and meal plan for four years, is available to all new freshman, transfer and graduate students, explained Admissions Director Seth Miner.
"Those students who take advantage of this program during their senior year of high school, and then continue their college career at Western after graduation, will have their tuition, fees, room and meal plan rate locked in at the current rate. They will not see an increase in any of their costs associated with their education at WIU," Miner added.
Area high school students and their families can visit WIU from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 31 and Thursday, June 1 to learn more about the program, as well as complete an application and register for classes.
"This is the perfect opportunity, as well as a most affordable opportunity, for our local high school students to receive college credit and get a jump on their college career," Miner said. "Western provides numerous online course options, as well as on-campus classes, that will fit into a student’s schedule."
To sign up for one of the visits, register online at wiu.edu/highschool (reservations are not required; walk-ins are welcome). Students must bring a letter of support from their school's guidance counselor or principal, an official transcript with junior year grades completed and an official ACT or SAT score.
