Vision and Hearing
Vision and Hearing screenings are performed in public and private schools for grades Pre-k through 12th grade. Sue Leon is certified by the Department of Public Health and has been working with the schools in our area for many years.
Screenings are provided to all schools in Hancock County except Hamilton because that school district has a nurse that screens their children. Screenings are conducted once a year for children in Pre-school , Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd , 3rd, and 8th grades, any child with an IEP, any new students, and any teacher referrals.
Children receive an initial screening, and then within 10 - 14 days is re-screened. If the child fails a second time, a referral is sent home to the parents. The referral is to be brought to the doctor to be completed and returned and forwarded to the school. The school will then provide the needed services, such as the child may need to sit in the front of the classroom or the teacher may need to use a microphone for a hearing impaired student.
