Standard-Based Training and Learning: Measuring Student Performance and Achievement

January 25

9:00 am - 3:30 pm

After teaching a standards-based lesson set, have you ever been disappointed by the quality of the students' work on a project or assessment? Are you interested in learning more about standards-based grading, including how to structure standards-based assessments and how to report standards-based performance? This full-day workshop will be divided by morning and afternoon activities. In the morning, participants will use existing student work samples to practice applying Student Work Protocol techniques. SWP facilitates educator reflection, encourages a growth mindset, and provides feedback for specific improving the planning-instruction-assessment cycle. In the afternoon, participants will discuss how to effect standards-based change in their classrooms and schools. Topics will range from developing a systematic standards-based approach to creating a hybrid report card. Presenters will share action plans from Illinois teachers and schools on how to move from conventional letter grading to proficiency grading. For the morning activity, participants will need to bring a formative or summative assessment along with the lesson plans preceding the assessment as well as samples of student work. Be sure to bring 5-7 student samples demonstrating a representative range of student work. For the afternoon, participants should bring an inquisitive mind, and samples of local work in the movement towards standards-based teaching, learning, and/or grading.
